Pamela Melroy is a former NASA astronaut who has flown three missions in space. She was born on September 17, 1961, in Palo Alto, California. Melroy attended Wellesley College in Massachusetts and earned her bachelor's degree in physics and astronomy in 1983. She then went on to earn a master's degree in earth and planetary science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Melroy joined NASA in 1991 and was first assigned to the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. She served in a number of different roles, including working in the astronaut office's mission support branch and as a spacecraft communicator (CAPCOM) for a number of space shuttle missions.
In 2000, Melroy was selected as an astronaut candidate and began training for her first spaceflight. She flew her first mission as a pilot on STS-92 in 2000, which was a mission to continue the assembly of the International Space Station (ISS).
In 2003, Melroy flew as the pilot on STS-112, another shuttle mission to the ISS. Her third and final mission was as the commander of STS-120 in 2007, which was also a mission to the ISS.
Melroy retired from NASA in 2009 and went on to work in a number of different roles, including as a consultant to the private space industry. She has also served on a number of different advisory committees related to spaceflight and technology development.
